The Masseria...

The characteristic features of the Apulian landscape are the wonderful Masserias. These strikingly beautiful farms are a sign of human presence and creativity, as well as preserving the rural architecture of a past autonomous community with the possibility to defend against strangers.

The Antica Masseria Torre Mozza complies fully with this characteristic. The entire complex is surrounded by a high protective wall in the typical Apulian natural stone. The tower is rectangular and has two storeys, the ceilings of the rooms are decorated with a magnificent cross and star shape as well with barrel vaults. The origin of the name of Torre Mozza could come from the fact that the former tower (Torre) was slowly falling apart, which should have lasted for years. This is now only existing as a ruin.

The history...

The Masseria Torre Mozza apparently built in late middle ages, was listed in the ounce land register, in 1590 with 320 hectares of land and was presumably owned by the notary Nicola Piccino. In the 17th century the possession of the Masseria was in the hands of Filippo Resta, the lord of the castle of Mesagne. At his death, the Masseria Torre Mozza passed to his wife, Francesca Sollazzo, from Torre Santa Susanna. In the 18th century, the Cacudi family acquired the Masseria Torre Mozza. During World War II the Masseria had two owners, the Polito and Cacudi family. Both families gradually sold large parts of the country and degenerated the farm so that it had been uninhabited since about 1960. The Masseria Torre Mozza has been owned by the family Amstutz-Coccioli since 1985, cultivated as a winery with the desire to revive it as an agriturismo. We realize this dream in 2017 and write a new chapter in the history of the Antica Masseria Torre Mozza!
